Patricia Denison–Part 1: “What’s been going on?”
Patricia Denison, professor of dramatic literature at Barnard College and author of "John Osborne: A Casebook" visits Mint Theater to discuss MARY BROOME by Allan Monkhouse. In this video segment, she offers glimpses into Edwardian social history as well as British theater history, providing a historical context for the play.
Denison also discusses playwright, John Osborne, who transformed English theatre in the 1950s with plays featuring the “Angry Young Man” that railed against establishment hypocrisy. Using examples from Osborne’s “Look Back in Anger”, Denison draws parallels between Osborne’s character, Jimmy Porter, and Monkhouse’s character, Leonard Timbrell, who predates the former by nearly half a century.
